Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to develop an understanding of why value-based (principled) leadership is important to organisations, what value-based leadership is, what values underpin such leadership and how it can be measured.

Editor's comments:
South Africa is plagued by the effects of unethical behaviour in government and private-sector organisations. This study examines what constitutes ethical behaviour, describes the development of a scale that can measure ethical behaviour, and suggests how organisations can go about restoring ethical behaviour. .

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should be able to:

  2. Discuss what values can be understood as being universally acceptable moral values
  3. Describe the essence of transformational, servant, authentic and ethical leadership
  4. Describe the positive organisational outcomes associated with principled leadership
