The city of Rio de Janeiro has undergone changes related to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, potentially affecting the respiratory health of inhabitants. Thus, the spatial distribution of respiratory hospitalizations (2008–2017) and the relationship between this outcome and potential air pollution sources in the city of Rio de Janeiro (2013–2017) were evaluated. The air pollution-related variables included industrial districts, traffic density, tunnel portals, a seaport, airports, and construction/road work. The results may contribute to improved healthcare planning and raise hypotheses concerning exposure to air pollution and respiratory hospitalizations. During the planning and aftermath of similar macro events in city environments.

Keywords: Respiratory disease; air pollution; spatial analysis; Bayesian analysis; sports event.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
Expose the user to the potential contribution of spatial analysis to the body of information that feeds into environmental health decision-making.
To sensitise EHPs for potential limitations in the interpretation of spatial analysis information when using the spatial analysis technique in practice.

Editor's comments:
Editor to give few lines summary on the article:
This study allows for a better understanding of the geographical distribution of respiratory problems in the city of Rio de Janeiro and similar city environments and may feed into possible improvement of healthcare planning It also prompts further hypotheses concerning exposure to air pollution and respiratory hospitalizations.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. The potential value in using spatial analysis as a monitoring instrument over time.
  2. To apply critical thinking and scientific logic to all information, especially when using secondary sources as the information base.
  3. To sensitise the EH practitioner for an alternative, but complementary focus on vulnerable communities within their respective work environments.
