A scanning approach study in which challenges facing Environmental Health professionals were provided by respondents working in health departments. Topic areas were further identified and discussed in focus groups to engage each topic area leading to the formulation of five related problem statements for each EH topic. This will enable professionals to prioritize research needs based on these challenges.

The aim of this study is to understand Environmental Health Practices in health departments of the United States and to specifically identify priority Environment Health challenges and related research needs for health departments. These risks could be adapted and compared with South African conditions to plan for improvement.
