Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of these reviews is to discuss different irrigant activation methods for root canal debridement and the selection bio ceramic materials for successful orthodontic treatment.

Editor's comments:

Root canal debridement and obturation are key elements of root canal treatment. Chemical adjuncts (irrigants) play a multitude of functions during root canal debridement as tissue solvents, antimicrobial agents and for removing the smear layer. Due to the complexity of root canal anatomy and tenacity of microbial biofilms, activated irrigations strategies are now used in combination with the traditional syringe and needle technique, to potentiate the action of irrigants within the root canal system.

Bio ceramics are a new class of biocompatible and bioactive materials that have been introduced in endodontics. Thorough knowledge of newer bio ceramic materials is necessary to ensure appropriate selection of material according to the clinical situation.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Key challenges related to root canal debridement

  2. Clinical efficacy of activated irrigation strategies
  3. Classification and properties of bio ceramic materials
  4. The scope of bio ceramic materials used in endodontics.
