A global overview of cancer in Africa

World Cancer Day takes place on the fourth of February. In Africa, cancer and its varied diagnostic and intervention options are still under-researched and under-resourced. This article gives an overview of 10 types of cancer of the five African regions from collated data spanning from 2002-2018.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to identify the most promising cancer prevention and treatment approaches available in Africa.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The trends in cancer incidence and fatality rates in the five different regions in Africa

2. The availability of medical devices used in cancer care across African regions
3. The association between the Human Development Index (HDI) and cancer incidence and fatality rates in Africa.
