Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
This article aims to assess weighted blanket application during sleep for young children with ASD with tactile and auditory behavioural manifestations of SOR (sensory over responsivity) who experience difficulty with falling and staying asleep.

Editor's comments:
This review demonstrates the importance of quality sleep in young children with ASD and SOR and how weighted blankets can assist in improving sleep outcomes. However, further studies are needed to examine the efficacy of weighted blanket interventions to increase sleep quality for the ASD population.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Possible sleep disturbances in young children with ASD and SOR

  2. The importance of quality sleep in children with ASD and SOR
  3. Application of using a weighted blanket
  4. Benefits and limitations of using weighted blankets in children
  5. Benefits of deep pressure touch on the sensory system.
