Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to determine the effects of virtual reality training in patients with chronic stroke, by combining the use of a virtual reality system and therapist-designed tasks.

Editor's comments:
This study shows that conventional occupational therapy treatment is important in the rehabilitation process of patients with a stroke. However, since the patients’ motivation and compliance are often a challenge, virtual reality training can help to ensure the patients’ engagement, in order to achieve better results.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. The consequences of having a stroke, as well as general principles for the treatment thereof.

  2. The use of serum biomarkers as outcome measures in the treatment of stroke.
  3. The relationship between the patient’s characteristics, upper limb motor function and serum biomarker levels.
  4. The implementation, benefits and effects of virtual reality for rehabilitation.
  5. The effects of conventional occupational therapy on patients who suffered from a stroke.
