The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of people with severe mental disorders (SMDs)

This study explores the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and people with SMDs and identifies the links between COVID-19 symptoms and treatments and the societal impact of the pandemic to the exacerbation of symptoms leading to relapse, hospitalisation or emergency care in people with SMD.

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to explore the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has had on people with SMDs.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The primary and secondary effects of COVID-19 pandemic on people with SMDs.

2. The extent and nature by which mental health problems were exacerbated by COVID-19 in people with SMDs.
3. Clinical implications to consider in future pandemics to prevent mental health deterioration in people with SMDs.
