Second metatarsal reconstruction after segmental bone loss using a custom 3D-printed implant

This case report describes staged reconstruction of traumatic distal second metatarsal loss using a patient-specific 3D-printed titanium implant, restoring anatomy, weight-bearing function, and alignment after complex forefoot injury, successfully treated.

Educational Aim:

To demonstrate the feasibility and clinical value of staged reconstruction using a 3D-printed patient-specific implant for complex second metatarsal bone loss, restoring biomechanics, alignment, and functional weight-bearing after trauma injuries.

1. The biomechanical importance of the second metatarsal in load distribution, gait stability, and forefoot function, and the consequences of its traumatic loss.

5. Postoperative management, functional outcomes, and clinical advantages of 3D-printed implants compared with traditional grafting techniques in complex foot reconstruction.
