This scoping review of 16 studies maps current knowledge, practices, and challenges of environmentally sustainable anaesthesia in Africa, highlighting resource-driven approaches and significant implementation barriers.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:

To provide anaesthetists and healthcare leaders with an overview of environmentally sustainable anaesthesia practices in Africa, identifying knowledge gaps, resource-driven techniques, and barriers to support context-appropriate sustainable strategies.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. Existing knowledge and clinical practices related to environmentally sustainable anaesthesia in African settings.
2. How to identify major barriers including limited education, financial constraints, and lack of policies affecting sustainable anaesthesia.
3. Resource-driven sustainable techniques (e.g. regional anaesthesia, TIVA, low-flow) and how to advocate for targeted education and policy development.
