Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to review existing evidence on the challenges to implementation of malaria vaccination programs in SSA and to explore possible solutions to these challenges.

Editor's comments:
In 2012, Plasmodium falciparum still caused approximately 207 million cases of malaria and 627,000 deaths, mostly in young children in sub-Saharan Africa. The gains that have been made recently in malaria control are threatened by emerging insecticide and drug resistance. New interventions are required if malaria is to be contained in Africa where malaria transmission remains high. A malaria vaccine is needed to complement current interventions.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Previous malaria vaccination programs and their challenges
  2. Current malaria vaccine  initiatives
  3. Insight into solutions to previous vaccine program attempts.
