Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to provide information on the beneficial cardiac effects of moderate exercise training and the possible deleterious effects of long-term high intensity endurance training.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. the electrical and structural cardiac changes associated with athlete’s heart,    
  2. how to differentiate between athlete’s heart and cardiomyopathy,
  3. arrhythmogenic remodelling associated with chronic intense exercise,
  4. and the influence of performance enhancing drugs on the heart.
