Periodontitis is a highly prevalent, chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease, characterised by progressive bone destruction and associated with tooth loss and various systemic conditions. The diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontitis and not only considered within the context of oral health but in the larger context of general health.
Careful diagnosis, elimination of causes and risk factors, proper maintenance and prevention and long-term follow-up are critical to the success of treatment, retention of teeth, and general health.      .
