Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to revisit recent advances on the usage of antibiotics in dentistry, focusing on real clinical needs with the possibility to reduce antibiotic consumption and related antimicrobial resistance risks (AMR).

Editor's comments:
Antibiotics can cause adverse effects such as toxicity, allergic reactions, and negative interactions with other drugs. In addition, the antimicrobial resistance phenomenon has had a sudden comeback with the COVID-10 intensive care because secondary bacterial infections requiring antibiotic therapy are common complications of viral respiratory infection. Dentists have a moral obligation to mitigate the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance. The importance of a rational prescription of antibiotics is crucial in order to prevent adverse effects thereof and to mitigate the negative impact of antimicrobial resistance on public health, health care systems, as well as the economic implications thereof. .

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Types of antibiotics and administration protocols.

  2. Antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures in patients at risk for infection.
  3. Indications for and risks associated with usage of chlorhexidine.
  4. Use of antibiotics in endodontics, periodontology, oral surgery, implantology and regenerative techniques.
