A resource-based review of traumatic brain injury (TBI) management

Traumatic brain injuries occur commonly and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality, especially in resource-constrained settings. Management need not be labour or resource intensive. Simple interventions could save the lives of millions of people who suffer from traumatic brain injuries.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to identify and summarize key recommendations for emergency care of patients with traumatic brain injuries using a resource tiered framework.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The global burden of TBI, especially in lower- and middle-income countries

2. The classification of TBI and how the classification influences monitoring and management options
3. The treatment algorithms and options available to health care providers, especially in a low resource setting.
