Simple interventions could save the lives of millions of people who suffer from traumatic brain injuries.

The aim of this article is to identify and summarize key recommendations for emergency care of patients with traumatic brain injuries using a resource tiered framework.

  1. The global burden of TBI, especially in lower- and middle-income countries

  2. The classification of TBI and how the classification influences monitoring and management options
  3. The treatment algorithms and options available to health care providers, especially in a low resource setting.
