Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to summarise the most recent scientific evidence on protocols for the non-surgical and surgical management of peri-implant diseases.

Editor's comments:
The quality and reliability of dental implant therapy has dramatically increased over the past two decades. Unfortunately, peri-implant diseases, namely peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis do sometimes occur. Peri-implant diseases are inflammatory reactions to bacterial infections affecting osseointegrated dental implants. The interest in this topic has markedly increased over the last decade. A huge discrepancy between the efficacy of non-surgical and surgical therapeutic approaches around teeth compared with that around dental implants has been reported. Patients have to be informed of these potential complications and challenges, and practitioners must know how to prevent them, and how to manage them when they do occur.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. The definition and diagnosis of peri-implant diseases

  2. The prevalence and impact of peri-implant diseases
  3. Protocols and indications for non-surgical management of peri-implant diseases
  4. Protocols and indications for surgical management of peri-implant diseases
  5. Adjuncts to implant surface disinfection.
