Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to look at more frequent and intensive session to improve articulation in Dysarthria, and in so doing, to improve the overall speech intelligibility.

Editor's comments:
This article provides an alternative to traditional Van Riper Therapy. It shows success in the short term, even after a short duration of sessions (only one week). Intensity appears to be the key to improving intelligibility.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Dysarthria – cause, effect of speech

  2. Traditional approaches to articulation therapy
  3. Direct and indirect methods
  4. Neural plasticity, motor learning theory
  5. The participants in the study
  6. The interventions used – Boost Articulation therapy using Articulation Drills or Minimal Pairs.
  7. The results of the study
  8. The limitations of the study
  9. The need for further research.
