Educational Aim:
The aim of this article was to provide an overview of casualty admissions to the Intensive Care Unit to try and identify the characteristics or reasons for intensive care rather than a general ward.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. Various conditions that usually require intensive care admissions

2. Factors that may affect cause for ICU admission
3. The most common reason for intensive care admission from casualty.
