The aim of this article is to elucidate the challenges facing critical care practitioners in diagnosing sepsis in the critically ill patient.

1. the difficulty in diagnosing sepsis

2. identifying infection in the septic patient
3. the utility of common biochemical, microbiological and radiological tools.
