This article explains how Periodization should be considered not only for athletic performance but also for rehabilitation of anterior cruciate ligament injury. Furthermore the study explains how the effects of ACL injuries extends to the Central Nervous System and not only the traumatic injured site.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to review the necessity of periodization in ACL rehabilitation and how periodization must include non-physical components such as perception and proprioception.

Editor's comments:
This study article demonstrates that an ACL injury is more than a “simple” musculoskeletal pathology, but that the effects flow over into the CNS and the patient’s psychology. Moreover, the article advocates to use periodization as a tool to optimally address both the physical healing as well as the neurological effects of the injury.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Understanding of what Periodization is

  2. Understanding the importance of periodization in Rehabilitation
  3. Understanding of the fact that ACL rehab should also include Perceptual and Cognitive component and not only purely physical components
  4. Understanding that traumatic knee injuries also affect the Central Nervous system, and adequate attention and should be given to motor learning strategies, to mitigate neuroplastic effects of injury which impedes rehabilitative progress.
