The aim of this article is:
Is the knowledge of a healthcare provider sufficient when interacting with a patient using cannabis for medicinal purposes with emphasis of when to refer a patient and when to know when medication substitution with cannabis is permitted?

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The need to gain more medical knowledge and training when dealing with patients that use medicinal cannabis

2. That the healthcare provider’s knowledge and communication skills about medicinal cannabis should be of such a nature that empowers them to know (a) when to refer a patient using medicinal cannabis and (b) when to suggest safe medication substitution when a patient is using medicinal cannabis
3. To create a ‘safe’ environment for a patient using medicinal cannabis to allow discussion with the healthcare provider and to (a) discuss the choice of replacing other medications with medicinal cannabis, or (b) when to decide when to refer patients.
