The role of an Occupational Therapist while working with CP children who use assistive devices

The purpose of this article is to explore the role of Occupational Therapy in assisting parents and caregivers of children with Cerebral Palsy in using orthopaedic assistive devices.

Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to identify and interpret the preconditions and instructions for the implementation of effective Occupational Therapy intervention during the use of orthopaedic assistive devices.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The importance of assistive devices for children with CP

2. The effectiveness of assistive devices for children with CP
3. The different services that an OT can offer to parent / caregiver and child with regards to assistive devices
4. Physical and social challenges faced by parents / caregivers and children using assistive devices
5. Further recommendation for the availability of Occupational Therapy services to parents / caregivers and children with CP.
