This article focuses on central venous catheter appropriate positioning for accurate haemodynamic monitoring using a Chest X-ray.

Educational Aim:

The aim of this article is to assess whether the tip-to-carina distance could detect the passage of the Central tip into the superior vena cava and the right atrium (RA), and to accordingly suggest cut off reference values for these two aspects.

Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

1. The use of a Central venous catheter and its role on critically ill patients.
2. Tip-to-carina distance positioning for accurate haemodynamic monitoring.
