Educational Objectives

Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to provide the dental clinician with a comprehensive update on dental zirconia.

Editor's comments:
Newly developed monolithic zirconia ceramics have substantially enhanced translucency and thus aesthetics of dental restorations. Furthermore, both materials and methods used for cementation of monolithic zirconia have significantly improved. In addition, the chemistry of adhesive systems has changed across generations. These new developments have increasingly encouraged dentists to use zirconia for their prosthetic restorations, especially were lesser intervention (tooth removal), greater strength and aesthetics are required.

Educational Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. Applications of dental zirconia in the dental setting
  2. Types of zirconia materials and their properties
  3. Surface pre-treatment, bonding, and cementation
