Educational Aim:
The aim of this article was to determine the effect of early mobilisation and increased frequency of physiotherapy treatment and compare hospital length of stay (LOS) (hours), patient satisfaction (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)), patient safety (30-day re-admission) and cost between the two cohorts.

Upon completion of this module practitioners should have a clear understanding of:

  1. The role of Physiotherapy through early mobilisation and patient education in same day discharge hip and knee arthroplasty
  2. The role of physiotherapists as part of the multi-disciplinary team in an ARP
  3. The use of ARP’s to provide good quality health care in a cost effective and safe manner in the management of hip and knee arthroplasty patients.
