Osteonecrosis of the jaw – types, aetiology, risk factors, therapy and prevention
Educational Objectives
Educational Aim:
The aim of this article is to discuss the different types of osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Editor's comments:
Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare but serious condition/complication
that is caused by disruption of vascular supply, or avascular necrosis with
exposure of the jawbone. The incidence
of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw is rising as more new drugs are
coming onto the market, the use of which can lead to the development of osteonecrosis
of the jaw. Currently, there is no unanimous protocol for the treatment of
osteonecrosis of the jaw. Thus, the primary focus is on the prevention of osteonecrosis
by appropriate education.
